Michael Lee Alley, affectionately known as Grandpoppy, passed away Sunday afternoon, July 12, 2020 at Duke Raleigh Hospital. Born October 19, 1954 in Greensboro, NC, he was the son of Dewey Edison Alley and the late Nancy Lee Holland Alley.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife, and highschool sweetheart, of 26 years, Lisa Parker Alley; their daughters, Angela (Brian) Kite and Rachel (Michael) Boerner; his grandchildren, Jackson, Emily, Ashlyn and Kellan; his brother, Joseph Alley (Mary Pat Norby).
Mike grew up in Raleigh and attended Millbrook Highschool and NC State. He was an exceptional builder and businessman. His daughters recall sporting Habitat for Humanity t-shirts as this was one of his great passions at that time. He built many beautiful homes that were featured in the Parade of Homes! He was humble, gentle and generous!
Mike found great joy in being with his family at Sailview to fish and catch shrimp at the canal, cannonballs at the pool and swimming in the ocean. Sunset walks with Lisa, Buddy and Jojo were one of his greatest pleasures. He always kept an eye on the pier that served “the best” cheeseburgers and chili cheese dogs. He loved his family and grandchildren so much. Mikie was best known as a lover/ feeder of all animals including but not limited to squirrels, possums, fish, cats, dogs, flying squirrels, birds, racoons and deer. He was also known to pick up worms off the sidewalk and ensure their safe return to the soil. The grandchildren knew him as the keeper of M&Ms and popsicles! It brings joy to the family knowing that he is now at peace with his beloved Mother.
A celebration of life service will be held Sunday, July 19, 2020 at 2:00pm in the Mausoleum Chapel of Raleigh Memorial Park. The service will also be live-streamed for those that are unable to attend. A reception for family and friends will follow at Mitchell Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Safe Haven for Cats or the SPCA of Wake County.
