

Born Muriel May Mitchell in 1920, Muriel was adopted in1923 by Edward J. and Mary Foord of Butler, New Jersey. Overcoming the difficulties and prejudices of her time, Muriel worked her way through Rutgers University night school during the 1930's. She married Frederick Vose Davis in 1939. In 1969, Muriel received an MEd degree from the University of Virginia and launched a successful career in psychological counseling in Virginia, Kentucky and in Louisiana, where she felt most at home. She taught at Nichols State University in Thibodaux, LA and retired to a home she built in Rhinehart, LA. In 1998, Muriel moved to Raleigh, NC. She will be remembered fondly for her sparkling wit, attentive listening, and vivid storytelling.
Muriel is survived by her sons, Jefferson Frederick Davis and wife Lula of Woodbridge, VA and Lawrence Morton Davis and wife Sandra of Lewisville, TX; daughter, Judith Vose Davis of Raleigh, NC; nine grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; and a wonderful group of friends.
The family will be receiving visitors at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, on Friday, December 14 from 7-9 pm. The family gives special thanks to the kind staff of Brighton Gardens and Hospice of Wake County. Contributions may be made in Muriel's memory to Alzheimer's Association-Eastern NC or Hospice of Wake County Foundation.
