Nelson was born on April 7, 1937 in Raleigh, NC to the late Roderick and Alta Hinton. He graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill and was a lifelong Tar Hill fan.
Nelson started his professional career in pharmaceutical and medical equipment sales where he was often recognized as a top sales representative. In 1977, he started two companies, Seneca Pharmaceuticals and Service Engineering. He took pride in growing his businesses and getting to know his employees during this time. Nelson operated the two businesses until his retirement in 2012.
During his free time, Nelson loved boating and spending time at the beach. He was also an animal lover who at one time raised horses and adopted numerous stray cats and dogs during his life.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; daughters, Terri, Tracey (Mark) Nycek; brother Cadmus (Luanne) Hinton and nieces Susan (Richter) and Kelly (Kimball).
Arrangements are with Mitchells Funeral Home located in Raleigh. A visitation will be held Monday, November 19 from 6:00-8:00pm at Mitchell Funeral Home. A private burial will be held at Oakwood Cemetery.
