

She was preceded in death by her husband, Major Dr. Charles Lovelace Wheeler, and by her parents, Edward Battle Yearby, Jr. and Nancy Louise Roberson Yearby. She is survived by a son, David.
Pat was a ninth-generation direct descendant of Joel Lane, the founder of Raleigh. She graduated from Needham Broughton High School in 1963 and cherished recent reunions with her classmates. She spent most of her adult married life living in West Raleigh with her beloved Charles. Pat was born a Democrat and died a Democrat. She was a huge supporter of many Democratic politicians past and present.
A lifelong member of Christ Episcopal Church, she sang in the Cherub Choir and in the Adult Choir. At a young age, she volunteered for the American Red Cross, at the Veteran’s Hospital in Durham, and at Rex Hospital where she worked as a junior aide in the Newborn Nursery. She was active in the Civil Air Patrol as a teenager.
She generously gave her time and talents to many organizations. She served on the Board of Directors of the State Capitol Preservation Foundation and was a life member of Preservation North Carolina and the Friends of the North Carolina State Archives. She served a six-year term on the Raleigh Parks and Recreation Greenway Advisory Board. A talented gardener, she was very involved with the American Hemerocallis Society and served as an honors and awards judge. She was honored to have a daylily named after her in recognition of her service.
Pat was grateful for Dr. Steven Liebowitz, her physician of more than thirty years and for special friends Meredith Therrien, Dr. Joe Gordon, and Dr. Jay Alley.
Funeral services will be at 2 pm, Tuesday, September 23, 2025, at Christ Episcopal Church with The Reverend Paddy Cavanaugh officiating. There will be a reception in the sanctuary one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Historic Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh following the service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Pat’s memory to Christ Episcopal Church 120 East Edenton Street, Raleigh, NC 27601.
