He graduated from Broughton High School in Raleigh and attended the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, where he was a member of the swim team. Following graduation, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for graduate school where he received a master’s degree in history. He met his future wife, Fran Shamberg Hoch, at UNC when they served as elected leaders of the graduate residence hall. They are considered the founders of the Graduate and Professional Student Government Association at UNC. He was inducted into the Order of the Golden Fleece, the Society of Janus and the Order of St. Andrew while at UNC and later served for several years on the UNC Graduate School Advisory Board.
Paul was very active in the Raleigh community. He was a member of the United States Junior Chamber (formerly Jaycees) and then joined a local club in Raleigh with Civitan International. He served as President of the Capital City Civitan Club in Raleigh and as North Carolina District East Civitan Governor. He was also a member of the local chapter of the English Speaking Union.
For many years he taught history at Wake Technical Community College and formed long lasting relationships with many of his students. He is described by one of his former students as a person you meet in life who flips your whole compass around not all at once, not with fireworks or epiphanies, but with a quiet shove in the right direction that you don’t even realize until years later.
Paul loved baseball and was a 40-year season ticket holder with the Durham Bulls. He loved history and his travels took him to many places that he taught about. But Paul loved his wife Fran more than life itself. He spoke often of her brilliance, grace and her career. He supported her career with that rare blend of humility and pride. She was his equal, his anchor, his proof that love could be both intellectual and soul deep.
He is predeceased by his parents, wife Fran, and brother Lindsay Hoch. He is survived by several cousins and a host of friends.
His funeral will take place on October 17, 2025 at 11 AM, preceded by a reception beginning at 9:30 AM. Services will be held at The Church of the Good Shepherd, 121 Hillsborough St, Raleigh, NC 27603, with burial to follow at the Oakwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd at 121 Hillsborough St, Raleigh, NC 27603.
Brown-Wynne, 300 Saint Mary's Street, Raleigh is serving the Hoch family.
