Randolph James Hill, 55, of Raleigh, passed away at his home on Sunday, December 3, 2017. He was born March 9, 1962 in Bath, NY.

Randy grew up in Bath, NY and attended Haverling High School. While he enjoyed classes, nothing made him happier than playing baseball – especially when he hit a homerun at the Red Wing stadium in Rochester, NY.

He went on to attend Notre Dame University as ROTC Army for his undergraduate degree, and Wake Forest for his law degree. Soon after, he served as a Captain in the United States Army JAG Corps from 1987 to 1993.

While working as an attorney in Raleigh, NC for the past 24 years he found plenty of ways to enjoy his free time. As an avid sports fan he enjoyed playing golf, cheering for Notre Dame football, the Carolina Hurricanes, and the New York Yankees at his favorite sports bars. He loved hanging out with his family and friends and offering his political views.

He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Betty Lou and Patt Gleason, sister and brother-in-law, Ronica and Tim VanGelder, niece and nephew, Erin and Mitchell VanGelder, along with many close aunts, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, December 10, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Mitchell’s Funeral Home - 7209 Glenwood Ave. - Raleigh, NC.

My prayers go out to the family at this difficult time. I went to High school with Randy. Looking back I always remember him being smart, funny, his big smile. But most of all I remember his kindness.
Although our paths never crossed again it sounds like you remained the same. What a wonderful way to be remembered.
Sending caring thoughts, Barbara Landry Lohr

Condolences to the Family. I met Randy through his brother Dick who is a
close friend of Lois and Harold Kelly. Due to late notification And because I am partially disabled I was not able to attend the service. Randy was my
friend and also my Attorney. Will miss him greatly. He was a terrific guy!

How do you explain Randy? You can't. He was one of those individuals you meet only once or twice in your life. If you are blessed. And I was so blessed. Starting in law school in 1984, through my last conversation with him in his office the week before he passed, he influenced me. Many years and many rounds of golf and beers later, he always entertained. Insightful. Smart. Funny. Empathetic. The irony is, while God gave him a bad heart, his heart is what I will remember most.

I met Randy as we practiced criminal defense law in Wake County, NC. As friends and colleagues we went to baseball games together. He was always willing to help me with a legal question. He was a truly great guy. I am shocked and saddened at his untimely and way too early death. I will miss his friendship and good humor.

My heart is broken Randy, love you so much... Kate and I love you so much!! I will cherish forever our time and wonderful picture together at the Pub in Bath a few summers ago! You were such a special part of all my years growing up, wonderful High School memories! Your smile and laugh are unforgettable as well as your group hugs! You loved life and lived it to the fullest... so glad you did! My only regret is that you didn't live closer so we could have seen more of you! You are in a better place now, God Bless. Love you, Laurie

I met Randy while I was working in the Superior Court judges' office in the Wake County Courthouse. I only knew him in passing, but he always greeted me with a warm smile and a hello, and it's that big smile of his that I'll always remember most. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. Please know you are in my prayers.
