Ray was born April 27, 1956 in Wilmington, North Carolina to Minnie Edna Williams and Walter Dally Burton. He grew up with a challenging childhood as his mother passed away in childbirth when he was six years old and his father was unable to care for him. He spent most of his childhood alongside siblings at the Methodist Home for Children - a historic orphanage in Raleigh.
He attended Needham B. Broughton High School and at 18, he joined the Marine Corps where he served for multiple years as an illustrator. During this time he met his wonderful and loving wife, Linda. They enjoyed fifty years together and raised two children, Michelle and Michael.
After serving in the military, he went to NC Central University where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in computer science while working. He taught computer science courses at Wake Technical Community College and NC State University. He then went on to work for the Environmental Protection Agency as a software developer, where he continued to work until his last day. He developed a comfortable life for his wife and family by working so hard.
He spent his free time practicing guitar and mandolin to play bluegrass with friends. He often expressed other forms of creativity with his wonderful paintings and illustrations. He had a love and passion for technology and science both in hobbies such as 3D modeling and as a part of his professional development. He shared those passions all the time with his family and they will forever be remembered as a core part of his identity.
Ray is survived by his children, daughter Michelle Burton, and son Michael Burton and his wife Natalie. In addition, he is survived by his brother, Charlie Burton and his wife Terry as well as his sister-in-law Paulette and her husband Dan.
Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Linda; his brothers, John, Dally, and Henry; and, his sisters Minnie and Priscilla.
A Memorial Service Ray was held Monday, November 10, at 11:00am in the Chapel of Mitchell Funeral Home. Burial followed in Raleigh Memorial Park.
