Robert "Bob" B. DeVries
January 15, 1935 – July 6, 2018
Robert B. DeVries (Bob) of Cary, N.C. and formerly of Emerald Isle, N.C. passed from this life on Friday, July 6, 2018. He is survived by his wife Marilyn, son Donald and wife Trisha DeVries, daughter Valerie and husband Scott Cole, son Kevin and wife Julie DeVries and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, David and Hannah DeVries, daughters Makenna, Kaelyn, Hadley and son Owen; Ben DeVries; Joshua and Morgan Cole and son Ryder; Kyle and Lauren Olding; Kaitlyn and Rob Sottile; Caroline DeVries; and Joe DeVries. He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Estelle DeVries and three brothers Buddy, Jack, and Dan.
Bob was born and raised in New Jersey. He graduated from Point Pleasant Beach High School and from the University of Virginia. After college, he spent 2 years in the 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Benning, Georgia and in Germany in the Honor Guard at the 7th Army NCO Academy in Munich. He was among the few selected to serve in the honor guard in Afghanistan and was awarded a certificate of achievement for his “outstanding performance of duty…”
After his military service, Bob had a long and successful career as a Systems and Product Engineer with IBM, which took him from New York to Richmond, Virginia, and then to Raleigh, North Carolina, where he and his wife Marilyn raised their family. He and Marilyn then went on to spend 25 delightful years at their waterfront paradise in Emerald Isle, surrounded by a strong and supportive community of friends and neighbors.
Bob was a devoted husband and exceptional father. His contentment was highest when his wife was at his side. His goals were always selfless, preferring to be surrounded by family and a knowledge that they were enjoying themselves and one another. His reservoir of laughter was boundless and his sense of humor remained his superpower until his final days. Countless were the memories of unbridled laughter around the dinner table in their Emerald Isle home with his extended family. He loved woodworking, racquetball, golf, beach combing, decoy carving, and a good glass of wine.
Bob was one of the most honest men you could know, and in his own humble manner he stood tall with the highest standard of decency and clarity of right and wrong. He was also a patriot and had no tolerance for the moral decline our culture has become so enamored with in recent years. Above all, he never thought more highly of himself than others, and he would not hesitate to give someone who needed it the shirt off of his back.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 11, 2018 from 12-1 pm at Mitchell Funeral Home (7209 Glenwood Ave., Raleigh, NC), with funeral services to begin at 1 pm. Graveside services will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family would ask you to consider a donation to the Salvation Army or the Word of Life Fellowship (www.wol.org), P.O. Box 600, Schroon Lake, NY, 12870, Memo: Rick Parker, Jr., Manaus River Project.
The family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the entire staff of Cambridge Hills assisted living community in Pittsboro, NC. Their tender and attentive care through the very end was a blessing to us all.

I love the photos - what a handsome man! I have such fond memories of our Bible study group with you and one time meeting in your house where I first met Bob. He was so charming and witty. I wish you still lived here so I could give you a hug in person, but please know that you have been in my thoughts and prayers. I have always felt a special kinship with you, and even if we never cross paths again in this life I am looking forward to seeing you in the next. I pray that the Lord would surround you with his love and comfort and peace both now and always.

We love you DeVries Family;
Memories of Kevin and Julie’s wedding; Dedicated to Mr. D;
My name is Drew, my name is Lance. We’re here to sing, we’re here to dance. We ain’t too skinny, we ain’t too heavy. We’re here to rap about our best friend Kevy.
Now everyone please gather round. We’re goin to tell ya what’s goin down.
His mom Is great, his moms a pearl. To us homeboys she’s known as Meryl. His dads names Bob, who speaks very little, but when he heard the news, he just said this riddle;
“ Just yesterday my boy was chillin in his carriage, now look today he’s ready for marriage!”
Well Kev grew up tall, he grew up fast, but he made some friends he knew would last.
Well I’m AJ Fresh, the Master Squeeze, I’m easy-goin, I’m easy to please. Lifes no problem, I hold the key, ask my main man Lou I have affinity.
And I am LP Ply, the Master Rap, I’m gonna come on strong, I’m gonna really attack! I never had a date with the Jude or the Nerd but I did catch her party it was really absurd! There was music, and mingling, and munchies for us! Oh my goodness that fiesta was marvelous !
Well us three guys took a trip on the Nuese; we were havin fun, we were bustin loose! You see we saw this turtle, we thought it was dead, to our surprise it was “No Head Fred”!
After the trip, we knew it was true; Us three guys were close knit crew. You see were like the Three Stooges, the guys you adore, but where the scuba group known as Team Dacor.
Well there’s more to the story, you know there’s got to be; Kev came illin to us, please set me free! You see I’ve met this woman, you know she’s real fine. I love her with my heart, and I want to make her mine.
So we say, Please come tomorrow. The dates the Fourth. Kev will marry this lady whose from the North. Kev’s got style, he ain’t no fool. He’s found his wife, she’s the precious Jewel!

Loved the picture tribute to Bob. He was always so gracious to our prayer group, wanting to assist in any way he could. May the Lord comfort your hearts and give you peace as only He can. Yes, "we won't cry because it is over but will smile because it happened."

Dearest Marilyn and Family:
We are so sorry to hear of the loss of Bob. He will be greatly missed
especially at a time when there is such a dire need for good men like
him who have such distinguished records of service to their country.
We enjoyed the times we were with you both, and greatly miss your
presence at Emerald Isle.
Bob is in the presence of Jesus and enjoying the wonders of Heaven.

Dear Teacher, friend, woman of God and sister in Christ to many,
There is never enough time to do everything, say everything, or be prepared to let go.
Bob, with his big blue eyes and infectious smile will be remembered by scores of people.
I have missed both of you these past few years. God has made provisions for you as you two made for many others.
I loved his hugs and his laughter. He was a tough man but meek and humble and fair minded in all his ways. He was a family man and was always glad to see the children come home.
My heart feels sore and bruised although I celebrate his going to be in perfect glory.
Love all of you. Sorry we cannot be there; to hold you and hug you and tell you what an extraordinary family you are. You had a wonderful role model and leader. How wealthy you are to have had a "Bob" husband and a "Bob" Dad. Toni & Pat

Sweet sister, Marilyn,
My heart breaks along with yours at the vacancy left by Bob's passing. He has left us with so many happy memories of smiles, witty sayings and especially laughter. What a blessing it has been to spend so many happy times through the years with him.
I thank God for his life and I am thankful also that I know he has already looked into the face of Jesus---what an unimaginable joy is his now.
I love you Marilyn and I am praying God's peace will surround you in your grief.
