Robert was born on August 21, 1936, in Shelby, NC, to the late Thomas and Mary Gamble Diehl.
After graduating from high school, Robert married the love of his life, Carolyn Cabaniss Diehl, and were married for over 50 years. Robert then served in the Army and was stationed in Germany. Robert and Carolyn had many adventures traveling all over Europe during their time there. Following his military service, he returned to the United States and built a successful career as a food sales broker. His expertise eventually led him to establish his own company, Pine Glo Products, which he ran successfully for over 40 years.
In his younger days he played baseball for a New York Yankees Farm League team. As he matured, he developed a love for golf and working in the yard. He enjoyed these activities until his last days. He was extremely proud of his Azaleas and Camelias, often referring to his yard as “Little Augusta”.
He is survived by his sons, Robert Patrick Diehl Jr. and his wife, Jennifer, and Matthew Diehl and his wife, Jenna, all of Raleigh; his daughters, Robyn Diehl Boyd and her husband, William, of Wilmington, NC, and Candice Diehl and her wife, Sharon, of Raleigh; his companion, Betty Housel, of Mooresville; seven grandchildren, Harrison, Preston, Castle, Hunter, Carter, Lindsey, and Avery; one great-grandchild, Palmer; and his dog, Little Diehl.
The family will hold a private service, with a public Celebration of Life to be held at North Ridge Country Club on May 30th at 4:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Saving Grace Animals for Adoption.
