On December 11, 2025, Robert peacefully went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ—the One he loved, served, and trusted all the days of his life.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Ivory C. and Zella D. Smith; his son, Robert L. Smith, Jr.; his brothers, Ernest Smith and Herman (Carol) Smith; his sisters, Lillie Norean Mosley and Ernestine Gordon; his grandchildren, James and Dana Austin; his great-grandson, Lucas Austin; and his son-in-law, Charles Curle, Sr.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 77 years, Lillie Bradley Smith; his daughters, Stephanie Hughley and Sharon Curle; his daughter-in-law, Mary Smith; along with eleven grandchildren and sixteen greatgrandchildren, and a host of nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and nieces, all of whom were a constant source of joy and pride.
A licensed and ordained minister, Robert faithfully answered God’s call on his life. He was a graduate of Moody Bible College and pursued additional studies at Ashland University and Kent State University. From 1993 to 2015, he served as pastor of Grace Christian Fellowship, where he shepherded with humility, wisdom, and love. He also facilitated a weekly Promise Keepers men’s group, encouraging men to walk faithfully with God, honor their families, and live lives of integrity.
Robert was deeply committed to serving others, both in ministry and in the community. He worked for the City of Canton for over 20 years, serving as a liaison between residents and the city government on the distribution of Community Development Block Grants and later serving on the City Planning Commission.
Earlier in his career, Robert worked for the A&P Grocery Store for more than 20 years. He was the first Black employee hired at the East Tuscarawas store in Canton, Ohio. Through diligence, perseverance, and excellence, he rose to become a store manager in Akron, Ohio, leaving a legacy of quiet strength and leadership.
Beyond his work and ministry, Robert thoroughly enjoyed God’s creation. He was an avid golfer, hunter, and fisherman, and he truly loved every moment spent on the golf course, in the woods, or by the water. Those activities brought him joy, peace, and time for reflection, often becoming yet another way he experienced God’s presence. He also loved music and enjoyed playing the saxophone.
Above all else, Robert loved God, his family, and the people God placed in his life. He lived by the truth of Micah 6:8—to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God—and aspired daily to be the righteous man described in Psalm 1. Those who knew him will forever remember his steady faith, gentle spirit, and his often-repeated words that summed up his life’s philosophy: “Life is about relationships.”
A funeral service was held in the Chapel of Mitchell Funeral Home on Friday, December 19, 2025, at 2:00pm. Entombment followed in Raleigh Memorial Park.
