It is with great sadness that we lost our beloved Roger Lee Smith, on November 8, 2025. Roger was 59 years old, he was born in Wake County, North Carolina, to Thomas Judd Smith, Sr., and Lassie Ardell Marshall Smith.
He was a devoted son, brother, father, and grandfather who dedicated his life to serving the public, his community, and others. Roger proudly served as a full-time police officer for over 30 years, spending 16 years with the Knightdale Police Department and 14 years with the Wake Med Police Department. His dedication to public safety extended beyond law enforcement – he also volunteered as a firefighter with the Garner Fire Department for 20 years and worked for Knightdale Fire Department. Roger was a charter member of R.E.D.S. (Rescue, Extrication, and Delivery Specialists) where he continued his lifelong commitment to public service helping others in times of need.
Outside of work, Roger lived life to the fullest He was an avid fisherman and hunter, and huge Carolina Hurricanes fan who never missed a game when he could help it. NASCAR and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. super fan. You would find him on many a Sunday afternoon watching the race. Some of his happiest moments were spent on family beach trips, where his laughter and love filled every gathering.
Roger is survived by his beloved daughters, Kayleigh Danielle Smith and Allyssa Jade Schaffer; his cherished granddaughter, Kyra Christina Smith; his mother, Lassie Ardell Marshall Smith; his brother, Thomas Judd Smith, Jr.; and his longtime partner, Aurora Rodriguez.
He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Judd Smith, Sr., who passed away in 2022.
Roger’s dedication, compassion, and sense of humor touched countless lives. His legacy of service, family and friendship will live on through all who knew him.
Family will receive friends on Sunday, November 16, 2025 from 3:00 pm - 7:00 pm at Mitchell Funeral Home at Raleigh Memorial Park in Raleigh, NC. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, November 17, 2025 at 12 Noon at Providence Church in Raleigh, NC. Interment will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Park, adjacent to McLaurin Funeral Home, in Clayton, NC.
