Scott was born on August 19, 1967 and grew up in Cary, North Carolina. After graduating from Cary High School in 1985, Scott earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from N.C. State University in 1990. He married Melissa Herring of Raleigh on August 15, 1994 and their son, Mitchell, was born in 2002.
Scott worked in several I.T. positions during his career, most recently at Itron in Raleigh.
Early in life, Scott was drawn to the outdoors. He spent many summers swimming and surfing at Emerald Isle, which led to his lifelong interest in skateboarding. Through skate culture, he was introduced to punk and metal music, which he grew to love, and eventually learned to play bass guitar. He also enjoyed biking, hiking, backpacking, camping and participating in scouting activities with his son.
Scott loved travel and was an avid reader, especially books about history and politics. He was passionate about economic and social justice and possessed a curiosity about the world that was contagious and inspiring to those who were fortunate enough to be called his friend.
In addition to his wife and son, Scott is survived by his parents, Jim and Alice Swindell of Cary; a sister, Allison Swindell Wagaman (Dean Wagaman) of Morehead City, NC; his mother-in-law Jean Herring; two sisters-in-law, Laura Herring Kelly (Greg Kelly), and Heather Herring (Graham Fry), all of Raleigh; and six nephews: Troy, John, Wyatt, Theo, Matthew and Jack.
