A graduate of East Carolina University in 1965, Carol dedicated her life to teaching and learning. After working initially in Florida with elementary school students, she moved to Hattiesburg, Mississippi and taught all African American students in the Jim Crow South. Eventually, she returned to Raleigh to begin an over 35-year career at Needham B. Broughton High School. At Broughton, Carol taught a wide variety of courses in the Social Studies department including World History, US History, Psychology, and Sociology. She helped to bring both the innovative Paideia program and Advanced Placement United States History course to Broughton. Carol was one of the first graduates of the Master of Arts and Liberal Studies (MALS) program at NC State University in 1992 and attended the National Humanities Center teaching workshops. She took what she learned in those interdisciplinary programs and incorporated it into her teaching. With a sharp wit and creative style, Carol brought love and humor into both the classroom and her relationships with students. An avid reader, Carol was a longtime member of the Broughton High School faculty book club. She enjoyed growing tomatoes in the summer and tending to her azalea, gardenia, and hydrangea bushes in the warmer months. An animal lover with a tender heart, Carol adopted various cats, dogs, and other animals of all kinds throughout her life.
Carol was predeceased by her father, Walter E. Marr, Jr., her mother Evelyn Laney Marr, and her sister Jean Laney Bailey. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Michael E.
