Sherri spent over three decades at Duke Energy/Progress, where she served as Director of Technology Process and Support Services. But to define her by her career alone would miss the heart of who she was—Sherri was a vibrant, generous soul who brought light and connection everywhere she went.
She is survived by her devoted husband and steadfast partner through every step of her journey, Alex Fonvielle; her beloved bonus daughter Keaton Fonvielle and son-in-law Daniel Plant; her mother Patricia Anne Craig and her husband Dempsey Craig; her sister Lori Pearson and her husband Chris Pearson, and their children Heather and Brian; her sister in spirit Janet Gregg and her husband Steve Gregg; the extended Fonvielle Family; and most importantly, her goldendoodle Archie, constant companion and partner in fun.
She was predeceased by her father, Kirby Devane Powell, whom she loved dearly, and his wife, Myrtie Tysinger Powell; her paternal grandparents, Gordon and Alene Powell and maternal grandparents, Wilson and Marguerite Murr; and her mother-in-law, Margaret Fonvielle Heyward.
Sherri’s life was full of joyful motion—agility and training classes with Archie, trips out west with Alex, karate, and an ever-growing circle of friends-turned-family. She was known for her infectious laugh, sharp wit, and deep well of kindness. Whether it was a shared meal, a walk with the dog, or a heartfelt conversation, Sherri made you feel like you mattered. Her adventurous spirit and deep love for others turned everyday moments into lasting memories.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the many skilled and compassionate healthcare professionals who cared for Sherri throughout her illness, and to the generous neighbors and friends who surrounded her and Alex with love, meals, errands, and encouragement when it was needed most. And the caregivers who provided loving care and support in the final days at home, and became family.
Sherri leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and generosity—a life well-lived and deeply felt.
Sherri will be laid to rest at Oakdale Cemetery on July 10, 2025 at 10:00 am in Wilmington. A celebration of life for family and friends will be held on July 12, 2025 from 6-8 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the American Cancer Society, designated to Lung Cancer Research, and share a kind word, take a walk with someone you love, offer support to a friend or loved one battling illness (or their caregiver), or simply do something spontaneous and joyful in Sherri’s honor.
Brown-Wynne, 300 Saint Mary's St., Raleigh, is serving the Fonvielle family.
