Left to carry on her spirit is her husband, Scott Larsen; daughter, Julie Strickland; son-in-law, Kyle Strickland of Apex, North Carolina; as well as another daughter, Britt Matthews, and son-in-law, Richard Matthews of Pelzer, South Carolina, and her eight beloved grandchildren: Hadassah, Pennie, Evangeline, Elliott, Mercy, Sarah, Riley, and Emma. Forever remembered by her sister, Cathy Levins, with her husband Carlos Levins of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She is also remembered by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bency Burrell Smith and Doris Virginia Hooks.
Born in Asheboro, North Carolina, on May 5, 1950, she grew up as a preacher’s child and moved around quite a bit, living in Georgia, High Point, and Elkin. Moving frequently taught her how to make friends easily and foster authentic friendships with just about anyone. She instinctively knew how to help people feel comfortable and could get the most serious person laughing. Being the oldest of two sisters, she had fond memories of learning how to cook with her mother. Sherry continued to love cooking throughout her life. She made sourdough bread, cobblers, chocolate pie, blueberry pound cake, and french toast for her grandchildren. Her mother also gave her a love of dogs that stayed with her throughout her life. When Sherry was a college student at UNC-Chapel Hill, she even brought her poodle to class.
After Sherry graduated, she went to work at the prison and later transferred to probation and parole. She worked in the corrections department for 26 years in Salisbury, Greensboro, and Winston-Salem. Her jobs ranged from being a court intake officer and intensive case officer to being a probation and parole officer.
Although her career was an important aspect of her life, she always made time for her family and friends. Family was most important to her. She prioritized keeping her kids busy with various activities that they enjoyed. Sherry also made time for her mother and other family members whenever there were difficult transitions in their lives.
Sherry was an adventuresome and fun-loving friend. She was the primary inspiration for many adventures that included the Florida Keys, Hawaii, San Francisco, a few Caribbean cruises, a trip to Amsterdam, and a few other places in Europe. Being young at heart, she enjoyed dining and dancing with friends. Married for 48 years, she was instrumental in bringing fun, laughter, and excitement to her family. Sherry also had a peaceful and servant-hearted nature. She made her home a refuge in this crazy world. She had a sign in her kitchen that said, “Grandma’s kitchen is always open” and she meant it. She loved to serve her family.
Sherry will be remembered as a kind, generous, and thoughtful person who touched the lives of many. She was a friend who could always be counted on when needed. A woman of resilience, dedicated to working hard for those she loved while having a fun-loving approach to life.
A memorial service for Sherry was held Saturday, April 5, 2025 in the Chapel of Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave, Raleigh, NC 27612.
