Mr. Spencer Gibbs passed away at his home in Raleigh, North Carolina on Wednesday, March 24, 2021. Spencer was loved and cherished by many people in his life, and touched the lives of others in a variety of ways that will long outlive his time on earth. To know Spencer was to be positively impacted by him, and he regularly spent time helping others in need, whether in need of a laugh, an ear, advice, tangible help like a sleeping bag to the homeless, a tire change or aiding a stranded motorist, or any other measure of assistance. As the Eagle Scout that he proudly became in 1995, he helped other people, and stayed ready to do so.
Spencer grew up in Wilson, North Carolina, and was a graduate of Greenfield High School. He served as a volunteer fireman at East Nash Fire Department. After attending Wingate University, he later studied Arts Applications-Visual Arts at North Carolina State University, receiving his Bachelor of Arts in Arts Applications in 2002. In July 2005, Spencer began working for The Poindexter Group where he distinguished himself as a professional bail agent. He touched the lives of many people in their moment of need in the criminal justice system, reuniting them with their families. Spencer began working in web design and graphic design, and being the entrepreneur that he was, in 2010 founded Gibbs Design, Inc., a company providing web site and software tools. Spencer valued his work relationships and customers.
Spencer had a great many adventures, and his travels were far and wide. He was fluent in Spanish, and during his time at North Carolina State University, he travelled to Antigua, Guatemala to study the artistic styles and colonial architecture of the Mayan and Ladino culture, in an immersion program. With his dogged determination, he hiked the entire Appalachian Trail in 2001, accomplishing a feat not known to many. Spencer had an incredible talent for creating, and was gifted at building and repairing things. He had a great sense of humor, and loved laughing and making others laugh.
Spencer’s grandparents, Milo and Nell (Beddard) Gibbs of Washington, North Carolina, and Elton “Bud” and Lena Mae (Blackwell) Brownd, of Raleigh, North Carolina, his aunt Jane Gibbs Smith of Greenville, North Carolina, and his uncle Roger Rains of Coppell, Texas, precede Spencer in death.
Spencer is survived by his loving parents, Milo and Joan Gibbs of Wilson, North Carolina, his favorite sister, Leslie Gibbs Van Der Have of Greenville, North Carolina, and his nephews whom he admired greatly, Bruin and Rance Fritscher.
He is also survived by many beloved uncles and aunts: Buddy Brownd, of Knightdale, North Carolina, Diane Rains of Coppell, Texas, Gail and Michael Cogdill of Buies Creek, Cindy and Mickey Buffaloe, of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Jerry and Elizabeth Smith, of Claudville, Virginia, and many beloved cousins: Robert Hackney, Jr., of Zebulon, North Carolina, Stewart Hackney and Karen Hart of Sarasota, Florida, Anthony Brownd of Raleigh, North Carolina, Jason and Lori Cogdill of Pfafftown, North Carolina, and Thomas and Hampton, Taylor and Joya (Cogdill) Austin, of Holly Springs, North Carolina, and Emerson and Bennett Reese, David and Deborah (Buffaloe) Webb of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Caroline, Curtis, and Matthew, Corey and Rebecca (Buffaloe) Narron of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, and Peyton and Cash.
Spencer was also part of a large extended family originating from Mountain Creek, North Carolina, which blessed him, and time spent with each of them and in Granville County was something Spencer treasured. Not surprisingly, Spencer also created his own family with many strong and longstanding friendships. He will be deeply and sorely missed by all who knew and love him, and his memory will be cherished.
Funeral Services and a Celebration of Spencer’s life, officiated by Pastor Greg Templin, will be held outdoors at Ephesus Baptist Church, 6767 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, North Carolina 27606, on Tuesday, March 30, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. (You are invited to bring a chair.)
