Steele Carrington Williams passed away on December 11, 2012 in Jackson, Wyoming. Steele was born in Chapel Hill on June 10, 1987, son of Randall and Elizabeth Williams and brother to Watt and Timmons.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandmother, Sue Aldridge Perry and Joel Perry of Raleigh; and his grandmother, Jo Watts Williams, of Burlington, N.C; Uncle Lee and his wife Beth Williams of Wilmington; and his cousins, Ford and his wife Ann, and Betsy and her husband Angus McDonald; his Uncle Sid Aldridge and wife Diane, and his cousins, William and Meg; and his Uncle David Aldridge and his wife Dana; and cousins, Radford, John and Creighton.
Steele graduated from Needham Broughton High School and subsequently from the University of Montana with a degree in photojournalism. He received recognition for his work in developing the use of cinematography with cell phones and stated he was happiest when taking photos that told a story about people. Like his movies, he seemed to always be in motion. He loved the outdoors and was an avid and fearless wakeboarder and mountain skier. He interned during college at the Missoula Independent (The Indy) and was tireless in his efforts to get just the right picture of events he was assigned to cover. He was his own person and as part of his journalistic tradition, he had strong principles about injustice which came to the forefront when he worked in Baghdad, Iraq this fall. Pictures he took in Iraq also showed that he was gifted at capturing a moment or an emotion with his camera.
A memorial service will be held at White Memorial Presbyterian Church on Friday, December 14, at 5 pm with the family receiving friends and relatives in the Jane Bell Gathering Space at the church afterwards.
The scripture that had particular meaning for him was 1 Chronicles 4:9-10 - “Oh, that you would bless me indeed and enlarge my territory, that your hand would be with me and that you would keep me from sin.”
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The University of Montana School of Photojournalism, 32 Campus Drive, Don Anderson Hall, Missoula, Montana, 59812.
