

away peacefully on March 25, 2014. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and E l i z a b e t h
Holmes, his sister Virginia White, his brother Robert Holmes and his wife of 47 years, Johnnie K. Holmes.
In addition to his wife, Doc is survived by his children, Robert S. Holmes, Lynda Harris (Bill), Nancy Sutton, Dwight
Hawkins, and Pam Casey (Smiley); six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Doc was born on December 14, 1916 and spent his youth in Buskirk, NY. After graduating summa cum laude from NC
State and USC, he began a 30- year Army career, taking him and his family to destinations around the world and making
many life-long friends. After retirement he served as Business Manager of Athens College in Athens, Alabama.
Doc’s interests included dancing, bridge, golf, clock repair, church and Lions Club activities.
Throughout his life, nothing was more important to this true gentleman than his family. A memorial service will be
held at Hayes Barton Baptist Church, 1800 Glenwood Ave., where Doc and Dell are members, on Tuesday, April 1, 2014
at 2:00. A visitation will be held one hour prior to service at the church. He will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your local Lions Club, Hayes Barton Baptist Church, or Hospice of Wake
