Susie Nash Philbeck was called home to our Lord Jesus Christ on April 6, 2011. Susie was born in Statesville, NC on September 21, 1941 to the late Albert Alston Nash and Sue Stewart Moore Nash. Susie graduated from Statesville High School in 1959 where she was head cheerleader and voted “most popular” by her class. In 1963, Susie married her high school sweetheart, Bob Harrison Philbeck, an all-conference player on the Statesville football team who was also voted “best all around” by their high school class. Susie earned her degree from Mitchell College. In 1967, Susie and Bob moved to Raleigh after Bob accepted a job offer with the State of North Carolina. Susie dedicated her career to being a homemaker and mother par excellence for her daughter and son.
Susie spent the majority of her adult life serving in a number of ministries devoted to furthering the Kingdom of our Lord. Susie changed countless lives of others from her long-time leadership of a bible study ministry to a specialized prison population at the N.C. Correctional Center for Women. Susie has also blessed many lives through her service of many years as a volunteer for Bishop Lawson’s ministry in Southeast Raleigh and through her volunteer work with various ministries for our homeless population. Susie’s home was open to all and she used it as facility for her ministry. She regularly reached out and took in many students from Africa who have remained a part of her family even today—long after having earned their degrees. Susie adored the lady members of her “bridge club” even though they have not played bridge in over 35 years. Perhaps Susie’s greatest pride was in the lives of her twelve grandchildren—all of whom resided close to her. Each grandchild greatly adored and loved their “Mums” who showered each of them with infinite love and nurture. Indeed, the loving spirit of “Mums” will live forever in the lives of those who have been blessed to know this special child of God.
Susie is survived by her husband of almost 48 years, Bob Harrison Philbeck; daughter Mary Bo Thomas and husband Allen D. Thomas; son J. Heydt Philbeck and wife Caroline Beattie Philbeck; twelve grandchildren: Kathleen Thomas, Beck Thomas, M. Steele Philbeck, John Heydt Philbeck, Jr., Hannah Thomas, C. Beattie Philbeck, Eliza Thomas, H. Nash Philbeck, Natalie Thomas, Gabriel Thomas, Zachary Thomas, Sterling Boone Philbeck; sisters Sarah N. Speaks of Clemmons and Jan N. Roseman and husband Dana Roseman of Statesville along with many beloved nephews, nieces and cousins.
The family will receive friends Saturday, April 9, 2011 from 6-8pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 Saint Mary’s St. Raleigh. A service to celebrate Susie’s life will be held Sunday, April 10th at 5pm at Victory Church, 1250 Aversboro Road, Garner, NC. Private entombment will be held at Historic Oakwood Cemetery, Raleigh.
