Thelma “Bug” Slaughter Dempsey, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2011. She was born on December 29, 1923 and raised in Ahoskie, NC. She was the last surviving child of Russell Pruette Slaughter and Bessie Sumner Slaughter of Ahoskie, NC.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Dempsey, Jr. and her daughter Anne Cleo Dempsey. She is survived by her son, Robert Lee Dempsey, III, of Raleigh, NC.
She owned and operated the Western Auto and operated the NC License Agency in Ahoskie. She was a past member of the Eastern Star and active in the Business and Professional Woman’s Club in Ahoskie and Henderson.
She moved with her friend E. Anne Wortham to Henderson in 1969. There they farmed, and developed land in Vance and Granville Counties. They travelled the country and world together with their friends from B.P.W. She was active in the Democratic Party her entire adult life. She was a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Oxford and served on the Saint John’s Episcopal Church Committee in Williamsboro, NC. There is a scholarship given in her honor at Vance Granville Community College, by the B.P.W. of Henderson.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday October 25, at Highland Memorial Gardens, 109 Ward Rd., Ahoskie, NC 27910.
