Born on October 11, 1924 in Johnsonville, SC and raised in Washington, NC and Sanford, NC, Ted was a graduate of Sanford High School, and UNC Chapel Hill with a BS in Commerce '46 (Phi Beta Kappa), and received a JD from Carolina Law School in 1949. Ted began his career as a CPA, and was employed through the years with Rodman & Haigler CPA, Superior Stone, Martin Marietta, and finally Burroughs Wellcome, where he retired as President and CEO. He was very active in his community and his church, as a founding member of Hudson Memorial Presbyterian Church and former Elder and current member of White Memorial Presbyterian Church. His many civic roles included Chairman and Trustee of Rex Hospital, Trustee of Peace College, and the Board of Visitors of the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School. He was a former Director of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturer's Association and of Central Carolina Bank Corp. He enjoyed memberships in Phi Alpha Delta law fraternity and UNC's Phi Gamma Delta Epsilon Chapter, of which he was the longest living member.
Ted was large in stature and in life. He was co-captain of Carolina's Varsity Track team and was an avid Tar Heel all his days. He enjoyed following NC's High School football programs and had an uncanny knack for remembering scores and stats. He loved golf, hotdogs, caramel cake, doughnuts, dancing, and a gin & tonic. Nicknamed "Scoop" and the "Haig", he was the "birthday man," and never missed an important date in the lives of those he loved, always taking time to make a special phone call. Ted was the consummate gentleman; humble, sharp, kind to his core, and genuinely interested in people. He cherished his family, his faith, and his friends - of which there are many. He was passionate about all he undertook, and was blessed to be of strong mind and spirit until the very end of his 98 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alma and Theo Haigler, and his first wife, Nomi Ferguson Haigler. He is survived by his wife, Peggy, and his children: Ted, III (Beth), Becky (Mitchell) WerBell, Lee (Roy) Taylor, and Harvey (Michelle Webster); and by Peggy's children: Chuck (Clinton) Duncan, Joe (Kristen) Duncan, Tommy (Lisa) Williamson, and Paula Williamson. He was a beloved Big Ted and GaGa to his grandchildren: Tavener (Craig) Parker, Ted (MaryScott) Haigler, IV, Lupton (Katie) Haigler, Mitch (Kate) WerBell, Wesley (Carina) Taylor, Zack (Katie) Taylor, Hillary (TJ) Beach, and Elizabeth Haigler (Alex Dulay); additionally, to: Chase, Carter, Jelks, Grey and Chandler Duncan; and his great grandchildren: Eliza Craig and Gillam Parker, Eloise, Theodore V "Bear", and Cecelia Haigler, Waverley Haigler, Miles and Maddie Taylor, and Theo Beach.
