

Henry was born in Hamlet, NC to Martha and Harry Barrett. He moved to Raleigh in the 1930’s, where he attended NC State. He served in the Army Air Corp as a pilot instructor during WWII. While in service, he attended Airplane Commanders School in Montgomery, Alabama where he completed day and night solos in B-29s with a rating of VHB.
After being discharged from the military, Henry and his wife Mary E. Potter returned to Raleigh. Henry worked at Wright’s Clothing Store, where he owned the furnishing department. In 1968, Henry co-founded Barrett and Edwards, an upscale clothing store in Cameron Village.
Henry was a member of the Stag Club, which he enjoyed for many years. He was an avid golfer and loved to read. Henry was a wonderful teller of stories, to both entertain and bring happiness.
Henry is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Faye Kipp Barrett, son Thomas H. Barrett Jr., his wife Mary, three grandsons Alex, Woody, and Casey and one step-daughter Jennifer L. Sutherland. Three nephews and their wives and cousins Pete and Terri Wonn who have given emotional support for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Harry L. Barrett and Charles "Charlie" F. Barrett and their wives, and his first wife.
A celebration of life will be held Sunday, September 11, 2016 at 2 pm at Mitchell Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Transitions Life Care, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607 or the charity of your choice.
