A gathering to honor Toby’s life will be held on Friday, February 16th beginning at 6:00pm at Oasis Church, 1828 Ralph Stephens Road, Holly Springs, NC, 27540. Following the service, the family will greet friends until 8:00pm.
Born in Rochester, NY, he was a native son of Greensboro, NC. From the mountains to the coast of NC, his passion for the great outdoors was nurtured and grew over his 51 years. He was the epitome of the Great Sportsman.
His intellectual curiosity, especially in the realms of technology and theology, was insatiable. He was a seeker, always on a quest for deeper understanding, guided by the light of the Gospel and the wisdom of the Bible.
A Grimsley High School graduate (’91), Toby continued on with his education as an esteemed alumnus at the University of NC at Chapel Hill (’97) (Go Tarheels!) graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature.
Toby’s professional odyssey spanned over a quarter-century, during which he became a revered oracle of Oracle RDBMS, navigating the complex digital landscapes of MetLife, EMC/Dell, Red Hat, Duke Energy, and many others. His mastery of database architecture and his innovative spirit garnered him the “Global Technology & Operations Above and Beyond Award” at MetLife in both 2022 and 2023, a testament to his exceptional contributions and the high esteem in which he was held by his peers & colleagues across the industry.
Although he never married – Toby’s life was enriched by his three dogs – Ruth, Boaz and Jesse. They were more than pets; they were his family.
Known for his wit and humor, Toby’s quiet ways brought light and laughter to those around him. He was a beloved team member, a mentor, and a friend, always ready to share his knowledge and lend a helping hand.
Predeceased by his father James (Jim) Scanlan, Toby’s memory will be shared lovingly by his mother, Christine Burritt Bender (Allen), his siblings, Courtney Greene (Joey); Tayloire Queen (Tony); Jordan Burritt Scanlan (Adrian); nephews – JAQ, Patrick, William, Jacob, Weston, Carson & niece – Lyla – all who will deeply miss his presence including his large extended family of Scanlan’s and Burritt’s & friends.
