

Virginia “Jenny” Hiatt Younce died peacefully in her home on August 21, 2012. She was born in Mt. Vernon, Kentucky to the late Willie Lee and Margie Parsons Hiatt on January 22, 1924. Jenny graduated from Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, and received her M. Ed from University of Kentucky in Lexington. She was a teacher in the Lexington City schools until she started her family.
In 1965 her husband was transferred from IBM in Lexington, Ky. to Raleigh where Jenny resumed her teaching career. She taught in both the Raleigh City Schools and Wake County Public Schools for many years, and continued to use her teaching talents by tutoring in her retirement years.
Jenny is survived by her husband of 64 years, Robert C. Younce; daughters, Jennifer Younce and Beth Whitney (Mark); sons Chip Younce (Dawn) and Mark Younce; grandchildren, Chris Kellam (Heather), Jason Kellam (Jenn), Eric Whitney (Alicia), Sara Whitney, John Younce (Dani), Rachel Weatherspoon (Ross), Hannah Thongthai (Wor), Rebecca Younce, Adam Younce, Jacob Younce, Jordon Vines, and five great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings include Billy Hiatt of Mt. Vernon, Ky, Jean Murphy (George) , Betty Shelton, and Jack Hiatt (Elaine) of Lexington, and June Stevens (Jan) of Wildie, Kentucky.
In addition to spending time with her family, Jenny loved gardening, traveling, reading and ballroom dancing. She was an active member of the Dickens Club and later of Authors Ink. Jenny was a member of First Presbyterian Church and active in the Koinonia Class.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to Delphine Gachao, Gladys McLain, and Joy Ngugi for the remarkable care they have provided to Jenny over the past several years. They made it possible for her to remain in the home she loved.
The family will receive visitors at Mitchell’s Funeral Home, 7209 Glenwood Ave. from 7:00pm to 9:00pm on Thursday August 23, 2012. A memorial service will be held at Saint Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 7506 Falls of Neuse Rd, Raleigh, NC 27615 at 3:00 pm, Friday August 24, 2012, due to renovations at First Presbyterian. Memorials may be sent to First Presbyterian Church, 120 Hargett St., Raleigh, NC 27601.
