William "Bill" Tuggle Long

Bill was born on May 11, 1938, in Roxboro, NC. He graduated from Roxboro High School in 1956 and went on to study at Wake Forest University. In his youth, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father and playing football. Bill dedicated most of his professional life to banking, ensuring the comfort and security of his family, before retiring in 2006.

A proud veteran of the U.S. Army, Bill was also a Shriner and 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. He was an active member of Hayes Barton Baptist Church, where he was deeply involved in the Daniels Sunday School Class and the Yost Bible Study Group. Beyond attending, he served as a deacon, youth basketball coach, volunteer, and cherished friend to many.

Bill was known for his sharp sense of humor, his passion for music, gardening, and dancing. He was a dedicated Christian man who loved his church, his family, and his friends. His kindness, laughter, and unwavering faith will be deeply missed but will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar W. and Iris O’Briant Long, as well as his sisters, Mary Ruth Lester and Betsy Clark.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Hope; his cherished children, Mary Worthington (David), Alicia Ellington (Dave), and David W. Long (Amy); and his sister, Becky Oakley. He also leaves behind five grandchildren, who brought so much joy and happiness to his life: Justin, Blake, Will, Rowan, and Anna Elizabeth; along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who adored him.

A service to celebrate Bill’s life was held on Monday, March 17th at 2pm at Hayes Barton Baptist Church in Raleigh. The family will received friends following the service in the church fellowship hall. The service can be viewed at the following link: https://vimeo.com/1066620952
