Born on January 23, 1968, at the old Rex Hospital in Raleigh, Zoe was a proud graduate of Broughton High School’s Class of 1986. She went on to earn dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Biological Life Sciences and Secondary Science Education from North Carolina State University. A lifelong learner, she later earned her Master of Science in Science Education from East Carolina University in 2019.
Zoe dedicated over three decades to teaching science, beginning her career at Southern Guilford High School (1992–1994), then Leesville Road High School (1995–2006), and most recently at Ravenscroft School, where she had taught since 2006. As a National Board-Certified Teacher, Zoe was known for her innovative teaching methods and deep commitment to her students’ growth—both academically and personally. She supported them beyond the classroom by attending their performances and games, and cherished moments like holiday shopping with her advisory group for families in need.
Her passion for education extended beyond the classroom through textbook reviews and 13 years of service as a College Board reader. Zoe was also a regular blood donor and an active participant in fundraising efforts for the food bank and breast cancer research.
Zoe lived a life full of joy, love and laughter. She sought to spread happiness wherever she went regardless of circumstances and seemingly never knew a stranger, only potential buddies. Quick witted and unafraid to look a little silly, as a music lover she often made-up songs and phrases spontaneously. She found happiness in traveling, reading, organizing, and trying new things.
Above all else, Zoe treasured being a mother. She is lovingly remembered by her children, Caroline and Elliot Welsh; her parents, Courtney and Alexander “Sandy” Mullin; and her sister, Shannon Satterwhite.
Information about a memorial service will be available soon on Brown-Wynne, 300 Saint Mary's Street's website (www.brownwynneraleigh.com).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and/or the Museum of Life and Science.
May Zoe’s memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
