Donald L McConnell

Donald was born September 15, 1916 in Sharon, Pa., Hickory Twp. to James C. McConnell and Grace M. Hoagland. He attended Hickory Twp. schools, graduated class of 1934. He was a member of Covenant United Presbyterian Church for over 40 years where he served on the Deacon Board.

Donald worked at Sharon Westinghouse Electric Co. in Sharon, Pa. as an engineering representative with over 42 years of service. He enlisted in the Navy Sea Bees in World War II that joined in with the Marines in the invasion of the Marshal Islands to build the airstrip for the Marine Corsica fighter bombers. He did construction at Pearl Harbor and the island of Guam.

Donald was a life member plus 50 year member of the following organizations: Masonic Lodge #389 of W. Middlesex, Pa., 32° of the Consistory Masonic temple of New Castle, Pa. and charter member of the Consistory Legion of Honor-Zem Zem Shrine Temple in Erie, Pa., the American Legion post 400 in Florida, the Navy Seabees in Island X13, Fla. and the Englewood Elks Lodge #2378.

Mr. McConnell helped organize and build the Veterans of Foreign Wars post #6166 in Hickory Twp., Hermitage, Pa. where he held the office of senior vice commander and where his mother was a gold star member of the ladies auxiliary. The post was named after his brother James D. McConnell who was killed on Normandy Beach during the invasion on D Day.

Donald was married to Ruby B. Baucher who passed away on September 25, 2001. He is survived by his daughter Cathy L. McConnell of Boardman, Ohio, his son Robert J. McConnell of Macedonia, Ohio, granddaughter Bianca McConnell and several nieces and nephews.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: James in WWII and Thomas H. McConnell who served in England during WWII with #8LN Air Force and sisters: Dorothy M. McConnell-Hans and Winifred A. McConnell-Keifer.

Graveside services with full military honors will take place at 12:00pm on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at Morefield Cemetery, Rt. 62 & Maple Dr., Hermitage, Pa. 16148.
