RANDOLPH - Douglas Hubert Rice, age 86, was a resident of Randolph, Ohio. He was given his angel wings on January 11th, 2020 surrounded by loved ones. His life ended after a wearisome battle with pulmonary fibrosis.
Doug was born on December 11th, 1933 in Mars Hill, North Carolina to Carnegie and Wilma Chandler Rice. He was the third oldest child of his siblings, Betty, Polly, Billy, Judy and Janie. He went to Southeastern High School in Detroit Michigan. At 17 years old, with permission of his father, he enlisted in the Army as a Ranger of the 82nd Airborne and served during the Korean War as a Staff Sergeant, which took place from November 1952- November 1955. Shortly after returning home, he reunited with the love of his life Anne Louise Meyer.
On May 12th, 1956, he married Anne at St. Bernard in Detroit Michigan. Throughout his life, with his wife by his side, they lived in several states: Michigan, Colorado, Florida, and Ohio. During that time, they raised a family of seven children: Doug (Cindi), Andy, Becky (John), Jenny, Cindy, Joe, and their adopted daughter Diana. Later in life, he became a Papa to Amanda (Burt), Amber (Josh), Chad (Linda), Dan, Chantal (Rick), Brad, Ben, Drew, Jesse (Mallory), Alli, Casey (Darrin), and Taylor. He was also blessed with great-grandchildren: Angiel, Luke, Gianna, Bekah, Samantha, and Thalia. Through relationship unity, additional great-grandchildren: Kaylei, Brian, Jason and Kaycie. Ohio became their permanent home where they settled on a farm living out their days together and surrounded by their dearest loved ones.
Doug was a sports enthusiast. He loved the game of baseball and enjoyed many sports. During his younger years, he played baseball, and later in life, he played racket ball and enjoyed swimming. One of his favorite pastimes was watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s sporting activities, anywhere from dance and cheerleading to baseball and football. Besides sports, he enjoyed yard work, gardening, and every summer you would find him mowing the lawn on his cub cadet. He enjoyed life and good company. Many would describe him as a role model, hero, strong, great, firm, loyal, listener, humble, veracious, fearless, and genuine. He loved many things, but above all, he loved his family. He loved his Anne.
His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren survive him.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, siblings, and grandson Andrew.
A memorial service and and celebration of his life will be announced at a later date.
