Floriene Louise (Hall) Cochran, 95, beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, was escorted by angels into the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday evening, December 31, 2017. A resident of Atwater, Ohio for nearly fifty years, she had been receiving care at the Canterbury Villa in Alliance, Ohio for the last several months.
The oldest of ten children, Floriene was born on February 19, 1922, in Widen, West Virginia, to Earl Walter Hall and Florence Marie Blackson. At the age of 16 she met a young man, Charles Jackson Cochran, who quickly won her heart, and their marriage lasted over sixty years.
During World War II, she traveled to California for a time to be near her husband, who was a Navy “Seabee”; he was deployed soon after, but Floriene stayed for several months, securing a job assisting in the repair (welding, etc.) of damaged aircraft. Some of her memorabilia was shared a few years ago with the Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond, California.
Floriene loved being a wife and mom; she also found pleasure in crocheting, embroidery, sewing, gardening, and canning. As recently as three years ago she was still canning pears and making apple butter to share with family.
She became the family historian after her husband’s death, writing page after page of information regarding members of both her parents’ and her husbands’ parents sides of the family. These genealogical records and stories, penned in her own lovely handwriting, are family treasures.
Floriene loved reading her Bible, and she loved her church. For the last several years she had been a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Ravenna, Ohio. She had a beautiful soprano voice, and she loved singing the old hymns of the Christian faith; on one occasion in recent years she was coaxed by her daughter to sing a couple hymns with her at the piano during a church service.
Preceded in death by her husband Charles, four brothers, and three sisters, Floriene is survived by her children Charles J. (Marilyn) Cochran of Suffield, Ohio, and Debra I. (Roderick) Black, of Alliance, Ohio, eight grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren, as well as a sister, Amanda Olive Conner of Columbia, South Carolina, and a brother, Shelby Dean Hall of Bedford, Virginia.
Calling hours will be this Friday, January 5, 2018, from 5 – 7 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church, 745 N. Freedom Street, Ravenna, Ohio; funeral service will follow, with Pastor David Ballert officiating. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery, Randolph, Ohio.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff of Canterbury Villa of Alliance and the Hospice nurses from Alliance Community Hospital for all their care and kindness.
