Gladys E. Jones

She was born January 15, 1921, in Kent, Ohio, to parents Richard and Olive Pearl (French) Trumphour. A lifelong resident of the area, Gladys attended a one room school in Streetsboro and was a 1938 graduate of Kent State High School. She wed Reese L. Jones in 1943. They were married for 52 years.

Gladys had a long career with Ohio Bell/AT&T in Kent, Alliance, and Akron. She started as an operator on a “cord board”, then as a junior service assistant, service assistant, group chief operator, chief operator, and finally as assistant network manager until her retirement in 1982.

She was an active member of the First Christian Church, singing in the choir for many years and belonged to Annevar Garden Club, and Workbasket Club. She was an avid tole painter and took many classes with her tole painting friends and teachers.

She always enjoyed a good game of Scrabble with her mother, Olive Pearl, or longtime neighbor, Mary Karaffa. In her retirement, she tended a lovely back yard garden at the Pratt Street family home with the help of the very handy neighbor, Billy Galloway.

She is preceded in death by her husband Reese Lloyd Jones in 1995, and her five brothers: Sterling, Roy, James, Stanley, and Phillip Trumphour, and her sister Thelma Callen.

Gladys is survived by her three children: David (Loraine) of Fairfax, Virginia, Richard (Marie) of Riverdale, Maryland, and Marjorie of Redondo Beach, California; as well as her nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Her children wish to thank the staff of Alpine Assisted Living, Woodlands at Robinson, Crossroads Hospice, and a special thanks to Dorothy Jones of the First Christian Church. Their love and care allowed our mother a life of dignity and grace to the end.

Friends will be received Thursday, May 5, 2016, from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St., Ravenna, with Reverend Laurie Metzko officiating the funeral service at 1:00 PM. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna.
