

She was born August 26, 1921, in Deerfield, Ohio, to parents Leeta (Middleton) and David Sampson. Irma grew up in Palmyra, Ohio, and graduated from Palmyra High School.
Irma worked at John’s General Store in Diamond, Ohio, where she became a postal clerk and later retired from the US Postal Service. During this time, she met her husband of 69 years, Walter Head.
Irma and Walter performed a roller skating act called “Fun on Wheels” with her sisters Frances and Ruth Sampson. The group performed for 25 years at county fairs, lodges, nite clubs, and holiday parties. Irma was an excellent seamstress and made all the costumes for the “Fun on Wheels” act. She would also make riding outfits for her family that would participate in horse shows. In later years, she enjoyed making quilts and attending high school sporting events.
Irma was a member of American Postal Workers Union AFL-CIO, a 65 year member of Palmy Chapter #114 OES, and the Palmyra United Methodist Church. Irma enjoyed spending time with her family and watching the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Irma is survived by her daughter Ella Jane Heavner, son-in-law Steven Heavner, sisters Frances Davis, Ruth Gintert, brother David Sampson, granddaughter Kimberly Heavner, great-grandson Brian Andrick, great-granddaughter Taylor Jones, great-great-grandsons Noah and Nyle Rose, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Irma was preceded in death by her husband Walter Head on May 30, 2015. She was also preceded by her parents, her sisters Freda Ward, Helen Sampson, Donna Jean Mound, her brothers Thomas and Robert Sampson.
Friends and family will be received Monday, January 29, 2018, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM with funeral services officiated by Reverend Dr. Lee Martin following at 7:00 PM at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St., Ravenna. Private burial will take place at West Cemetery in Palmyra.
