James William “Jim” Wince, age 93 of Ravenna, passed away Saturday, April 21, 2012. He was born October 23, 1918, in Akron, Ohio, to Louis and Lydia Wince. Jim attended Stow Schools and graduated from Akron Barber College.
He met, Delores Cerra, while both were office employees at the Goodyear Air dock. Married in 1943, they moved to Ravenna where Jim was a barber for many years. Moving to Edinburg, he opened a successful barbershop and remained in business for 30 years. Always known for telling jokes and stories, customers were his friends and sometimes came into the shop to visit when a haircut wasn‘t necessary. During the 1960’s he had a reputation for giving the best “flat-top” haircuts, so customers came from all around. When he decided to retire, he and Delores moved to West Palm Beach, Florida. Jim soon forgot about retirement and went back to barbering in Florida.
In addition of being an entertaining person, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing music, watching movies and dancing. Family events and holidays were always special times because of his love of family.
Surviving are his daughter, Jeanne Wince Flick (Richard), son, James Wince Jr., sister Rose Nemeth, and daughter-in-law, Patricia Beal, as well as his grandchildren: Dr. Richard Flick (Jill), Michelle Rousseau (Ramon), Vanessa DePompo (Michael), Chad Wince, and Gavin Wince. Jim also has 9 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Those family members that preceded him in death include: his wife, Delores, son Gary and siblings: Louis, Frank, Elizabeth, Margaret, and brother-in-law Joe Nemeth.
After moving back to Ohio, Jim lived the last few years at Kent Ridge Assisted Living at Golden Pond and the last few weeks at Long Meadow Nursing Home. He passed away peacefully with care given by Crossroads Hospice.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held for family and close friends on Sunday, April 29, 2012, at 2:00 PM at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St., Ravenna.
