John T. Kinney, 88, of New Philadelphia (formerly of Ravenna), Ohio, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, May 1, 2026, following a tragic fall in his home.
Born in Ravenna, Ohio, on October 31, 1937, he was the son of the late Thomas and Lillian Kinney (nee Deal). John graduated from Ravenna High School, class of 1955, and continued his education at Kent State University, receiving his master's degree in education in 1968.
John was an avid reader and friend of the local libraries. He retired from teaching Social Studies and Advanced Placement History at Kenston High School, where he coached numerous student teams in the Academic Decathlon, achieving first place in Ohio in 1985. He coached varsity girls’ basketball at Kenston and Maple Heights and was an all-around sports enthusiast.
A lifelong Roman Catholic, John attended Immaculate Conception of Ravenna, Ohio, and Sacred Heart Parish in New Philadelphia.
Left behind to cherish his memory are lifelong friends, Dan McKay of Torrance, CA, and Gary Jackson of Northfield, Ohio, as well as longtime colleague and friend Pat Barnes of New Philadelphia.
No public services will be held. He will be inurned alongside his parents at St. Mary Cemetery in Ravenna.
