Joseph was born to parents Donald and Lois Bates in Frankfort, Indiana on February 16, 1944. He spent many years in the private sector before entering law enforcement. Joseph retired in 2001 from the Portage County Sheriff’s office after 17 years of service. He loved law enforcement and enjoyed his career as a police officer. Joseph was an accomplished combat shooter, winning numerous awards competing in competitions. At his peak he was one of the best in the nation. He was an avid fisherman and hunter who also enjoyed bowling. Even though he suffered immensely with numerous health issues he led a very active life. Joseph was an avid student of the Bible who had a unique understanding and personal relationship with God.
Joseph is survived by his wife of 41 years, Omah. Surviving also is his son Christopher (Christina) Bates and his grandchildren: Xavier, Evan, Luke and Zane. He also leaves many loving nieces and nephews.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, son Brian Joseph Bates, his brother Don Bates and sister Jane Tyner.
Family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St., Ravenna, from 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. where funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Brian Baxter officiating. Burial will occur at Greenlawn Cemetery in Frankfort, Indiana.
