Louise P. “Lucy” Sandercock, aged 95, peacefully passed on to eternal life with Christ on August 26, 2025. A devoted and cherished mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Lucy modeled not only unconditional love, but strength of character, generosity, compassion, and a wonderful sense of humor.
Born on March 8, 1930, in Cleveland, Ohio, Lucy was the youngest of seven children. After graduating from St. Joseph Academy, she attended Notre Dame College in Euclid, Ohio, where she met her husband, Donald “Sandy” Sandercock, at a Mardi Gras party. The two shared a loving, joyful marriage of 54 years until his passing in 2005. Together they raised six children in a Christian home filled with laughter, love, and a strong family commitment.
Lucy worked as an elementary teacher for a brief period before having her first child, and later at Wright Airlines, AAA, and St. Joseph Wellness Center. Throughout her adult life, she was filled with a deep sense of civic and religious duty to enact change that promoted peace and justice. With Panel of American Women, she spoke to groups about justice and equality for all groups of people. Through Witness for Peace and the Center for Global Education, she travelled to Nicaragua twice, where she witnessed firsthand the devastation the Contra war had on the local population. Dedicated to peace, she led prayer vigils, participated in a protest in Washington, DC, and distributed pamphlets and educational materials to raise awareness when she saw social injustice.
Lucy was a founding member of The Community of the Servant of Man, now known as The Community of Christ the Servant. This is a Catholic, non-territorial parish, where membership is based on personal commonality rather than residency in a particular parish. There she served for over 40 years, forming strong friendships that lasted a lifetime.
Lucy was a resident at Laurel Lake Retirement Community for nearly the past twenty years, where she had been involved in numerous committees and activities. She was also a Hospice volunteer for many of those years through Laurel Lake Hospice.
Lucy was warm and caring to all she knew, from her many nieces and nephews, friends, caregivers, and strangers alike. If you walked through Lucy’s door, you couldn’t help but feel welcomed and loved. She will be lovingly remembered for her bright smile, gentle demeanor, and spunky attitude.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Sandy, her parents and six siblings, and her granddaughter, Shauna Sandercock. She is survived by her children Bill (Irma), Tom (Linda), Michael (Karen), James (Eva Baran), Joan Marie (Mark) Delaney, and Patrick (Carolyn Clayton) Sandercock; eleven grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren; and her sister-in-law, Mary Sandercock.
A celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at 1:30 PM at Laurel Lake Retirement Community in the Community Room at 200 Laurel Lake Dr, Hudson, OH 44236. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Haven of Rest or Akron Canton Food Bank.
Condolences and fond memories may be shared at www.wood-kortright-borkoski.com
Lucy’s family would like to express their deepest thanks to Northeast Ohio Hospice and the staff at Laurel Lake.
