OBITUARY

Mary Ann Brode

May 31, 1936July 31, 2020

Mary Ann Brode passed away peacefully at the age of 84 on Friday, July 31st, 2020 after several years of declining health.

Mary Ann was born in Akron, Ohio on May 31, 1936 to Joseph and Antonette (DelMonte) Filomena. She grew up in Ravenna and moved to Kent when she was a teenager. She was a proud graduate of Theodore Roosevelt High School, class of 1954.

Mary Ann married the love of her life, Charles “Al” Brode, on August 16th, 1958. They moved into the Brode family homestead in Ravenna Township. Mary Ann worked at R.D. Fagel in Kent. She purchased a pizzelle iron with her first paycheck, the beginning of a lifetime of fine Italian cooking and baking. Once she became a Mom she made the decision to stay at home to raise her children. Mary Ann went back to work as a middle school Secretary for the Ravenna School System until her retirement.

Mary Ann was a member of First Congregational Church of Ravenna for over 50 years. She also had a beautiful singing voice and was a member of Sweet Adelines for 5 years, performing with her sister.

Mary Ann was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Nothing was more important to her than her family. She was an excellent cook and took pride in feeding everyone who entered her home. If you were fortunate enough to visit on Sunday, you could smell the aroma of fresh sauce cooking on the stove in preparation of her delicious pasta and homemade meatballs. She made dozens of Christmas cookies every year and delivered them to multiple family, friends and even her dentist office. Her generosity to others was limitless.

Mary Ann is survived by her husband of 61 years, three children; Brad (Cheryl) Brode, Doug (Kelly) Brode and Linda (Jim) Markijohn.

She will be deeply missed by her Seven grandchildren; Brittany Brode, Chelsea (Allan) Brown, Tyler (McKenzie) Brode, Garrett Brode, Jimmy, Haylee and Heather Markijohn. She was anxiously waiting for the birth of her first great-grandchild in October.

She is also survived by her Sister and best friend, Betty (Jim) Russell, sister-in-law Donna (Anthony) Filomena and many nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Anthony Filomena.

Memorial contributions can be made in her name to the American Heart Association.

Private burial will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery.

Dear Family,
I am saddened to hear of the passing of Mary Ann. She will be another bright star in Heaven. Though she'll be terribly missed, we can take comfort in knowing that we will see her again and that she is now with other loved ones who have passed before her.
What I remember most about her was her beautiful long hair, black as coal and shining.
The Filomena's and DeCapito's were a large, wonderful clan and I loved every one.
Peace and Blessing,
Treasure Anderson, cousin

Mary Ann will always have a special place in my heart. She taught me to make homemade meatballs with my daughters. I cherish this time we spend together and always think of her while doing it. Thank you Mary Ann, God bless you, rest in heavenly peace.

Dear Mom, I could never express in words the love I will forever hold in my heart for you. I was your sidekick growing up and there was no place I would rather have been. We shared ever emotion imaginable together. You were my best friend, my cheerleader, my mentor. You showed me how living a life of love, kindness and faith is the best life to live. You were so happy and good natured and loved your family limitlessly. I will pass onto my kids everything you taught me and your legacy will live on forever.
Rest peacefully, just knowing you are free from the pain you endured daily is a blessing to me. You were the strongest woman I know, never complained and smiling through it all. I will miss our daily talks, I can't imagine not hearing your beautiful voice everyday. I was blessed for 54 years to have you as my Mom, I will love you forever and think of you everyday, life will never be the same.
Your loving daughter, Linda Ann

Mary Ann was an important person at Brown Junior High. She had a great sense of humor and ability to complete her job with humor and a sense of duty. I have fond memories of Mary Ann and her comitment to the school and her family. After reading her obituary she continued to live her life to the fullest. Prayers and condolences to her and her family. I learned long ago from Mary Ann that the support staff is as important as the teaching staff in a school.
