Matthew Scott Hackney, 47, of Akron, Ohio, passed away on June 27, 2026, just days before his 48th birthday.
Born on June 30, 1978, in Akron, Ohio, Matt lived a life marked by kindness, compassion, creativity, and unwavering faith. He was a builder by trade and took great pride in creating things with his hands. Beyond his work, Matt was an artist at heart. He loved drawing, writing, singing, and dancing, and during his school years he proudly participated on the dance team. His handsome smile could light up any room, and his joyful spirit made people feel welcome wherever he went.
Matt had a true passion for cooking and baking. He loved challenging family and friends to beat his recipes and was especially proud of winning a chili cook-off. His Russian tea cakes were legendary among those who knew him, and his chicken and rice casserole became a beloved family favorite that brought everyone together around the table.
More than anything, Matt loved his family and friends. He was the first to lend a helping hand and never hesitated to put others before himself. He had a special heart for those who were hurting, often sharing clothing, food, toiletries, and blankets with people experiencing homelessness. His love for Jesus Christ guided his life, and he wasn't afraid to share his faith through both his words and his actions.
Matthew is survived by his loving mother, Cherie Ross, and stepfather, Jeff Ross; his father, Tim Hackney; his beloved children, Alanna, Brooke (Marcus Day), Chance, and Lily; and his cherished grandchildren, TJ, Marley, and Baby Day, who is expected to arrive soon. He is also survived by his aunts and uncles: Chris and Curt Dancy; Wendy and Bill Lee; Sue and Jerry Wamsley; Rhonda Goodman; Sharon Mullins; Linda Abbott; Sondra Hackney; Roger and Shirley Hackney; Faye Hackney; Tina and Allen Barlow; Wayne and Renee Ross; and George Ross, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends who were blessed to know him.
Matthew was preceded in death by his grandparents, Charles and Shirley Cradlebaugh and Roy and Pearline Hackney, and his step-grandmother, Grace Smith.
Matt's legacy is one of love, generosity, faith, and compassion. Whether he was building a home, preparing a meal, encouraging a friend, or helping a stranger, he gave his whole heart. He will be remembered not only for his many talents and radiant smile but for the kindness he showed to everyone he met. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 2 at Cottage Grove EOC. 3133 Cottage Grove Rd Akron, Ohio. Calling hours will be from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., followed immediately by a Celebration of Life service and a dinner. The service will be officiated by Wayne Ross.
