Mrs. Worrell was a 1930 graduate of Noxubee Agricultural High School. She graduated from MSCW and was a member of the Golden Girls' Club in recognition of fifty years of support of the college. The 1936 yearbook, the Meh Lady, said of her, “Delightfully abrupt, outspoken and frank—she has a keen sense of the ridiculous and a kindly sense of humor that is entirely her own.” She also attended
Mississippi State and did postgraduate work at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
A dedicated history teacher, she taught in Kemper County and then came to Hinds County to Lebanon School, where she was Principal. She met George Worrell when he helped her issue sugar ration books for the war effort. They fell in love over a game of dominoes. He had already volunteered as a Navy
Seabee and left for service in the South Pacific a week after their marriage in October, 1942. She taught in Utica and Mashulaville during WWII. In 1967 she became a charter member of the REBUL Academy faculty in Learned. She was selected as a Star Teacher three times and maintained contact with many students over the years.
As a faithful member of Lebanon Presbyterian Church, she served as Sunday School Teacher, WIC leader, Catechism teacher, Vacation Bible School Director, and historian for the Centennial Celebration.
In the 1970s Mrs. Worrell began a second career as a local journalist with her weekly column on the Lebanon Community for the Hinds County Gazette. She was widely known for her chicken pie, generosity, and “high-heeled good times.” George Worrell claimed that if you counted all the chickens she had cooked and given away, it would make a flock from Burleigh to Jackson.
