Bernard was a member of St. James Chapel Church of God in Christ in Reading. He was employed by Buckeye Partners LP from 1992 until the time of his passing. He was a Reading High School graduate, class of 1978, attended Morgan St. University for two years and also attended Drexel University for a year. Bernard loved football and he was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl (Mathus) Hammond, whom he wed on May 16, 1987. Bernard is also survived by his two daughters, Chloe Oram and her husband, Alan, of Atlanta GA, and Raylynn Hammond of Hamburg; and a grandson, Christopher Bernard Oram. In addition, he is survived by his brothers and sisters, William A. Hammond of Elkins Park; Maxine Smith and her husband, William,of Exeter Twp.; Karen Bowers and her husband, James, of W. Reading; Tanya Kama and her husband, Benjamin, of W. Reading; Tommie Hampton of Reading; and Wayne Workman of Reading. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews and cousins, along with his godchildren, Brittany Lozanne and Kayla Simmons. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Patricia Bowen, Diane Ali and Barbara Hammond.
Friends and family will be recieved at the Auman Funeral Home, Reading, on Thursday from 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the St. James Chapel Church of God in Christ, 11 S. 9th Street, Reading, PA 19602 on Friday at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 10-11 a.m. Interment will be in the Forest Hills Memorial Park. www.theocaumaninc.com.
