Cecilio "Ciro" Candelaria, 98, of Caguas, Puerto Rico, entered eternal rest on Thursday, May 22, 2025. Born on September 1, 1926, in Hatillo, Puerto Rico, a son of the late Epifanio and Josefa Candelaria. In addition to his parents, Ciro was welcomed into heaven by his 1st wife, Lydia E. (Perez) Candelaria; his 2nd wife Arcadia Velez; his son, Albert Candelaria; his daughter, Miriam Ortiz; and his 4 siblings: Ernesto, Juan, Jose, and Anacasia Candelaria.
Ciro’s journey of service began in the U.S. Army, where he proudly served during the Korean conflict and was stationed in Germany; a chapter of his life he carried with pride.
After settling in Reading, PA, Ciro quickly became a pillar of the community—a parishioner at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church and a committed leader on the committee of the Puerto Rican Club. In the 1960s and ’70s, he became a guiding light for many aspiring musicians in the area, generously sharing his talent by teaching others to play the guitar and the cuatro, Puerto Rico’s national instrument. Through his leadership and love of music, he uplifted others and celebrated his heritage. At the same time, he built a steady and dedicated career as a chipper with Birdsboro Corporation, where he worked for 24 years before embracing a well-earned retirement.
Ciro’s love for music was matched by his passion for cooking; especially his famous coconut candy, made from a recipe few could recreate. His kitchen was a place of warmth, filled with stories, laughter, and lasting memories.
He’ll be remembered for his generous spirit and the traditions he so lovingly shared.
Rest in peace, dear Ciro.
Ciro is survived by his daughters, Gloria E. Candelaria Rosado and her husband Nicolas, and Eneida Natira; and his son, Luis Candelaria. He also leaves behind a loving legacy of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren who will forever cherish his memory.
