A life spanning more than a century. A love reaching across generations. A legacy that will live forever.
With profound sadness, immeasurable love, and deep gratitude for a life so beautifully lived, we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved matriarch, Mrs. Harriet Ellen Smith, who departed this earthly life on October 24, 2026, at the remarkable age of 105. Surrounded by the love of a family whose lives she shaped across generations, Harriet peacefully entered her eternal rest in her sleep in Reading, Pennsylvania.
Born on May 21, 1921, in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, Harriet’s life was an extraordinary journey through more than a century of history, change, perseverance, and love. From the world of 1921 to the world of 2026, she witnessed generations rise, communities transform, and the unimaginable become possible. Yet through it all, one thing remained constant: the enduring importance of family and the roots that connect us to one another.
Pennsylvania was more than Harriet’s birthplace; it was the foundation of her story. Her roots ran deep in the soil of the Commonwealth, where her life’s journey began and where, 105 years later, it peacefully came to its close. Although her family would eventually spread across the country and around the world, Pennsylvania remained a cherished connection to the woman from whom so many lives and stories began.
At the heart of Harriet’s extraordinary legacy were her six children: William Sheldon Smith, David Smith, Robert Smith, James Scott Smith, Norma Leona Gunner, and Bertha Mae Smith. Through them, her family tree grew into something truly remarkable, with branches stretching farther than she could ever have imagined.
Harriet was blessed with 33 grandchildren, along with an extraordinary number of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and even great-great-great-grandchildren. Five generations of descendants carry forward a piece of her story, her heritage, and the remarkable family legacy she helped create.
To comprehend 105 years of life is to imagine the countless birthdays celebrated, holidays shared, stories told, lessons learned, and memories made. It is to recognize the strength required to navigate more than a century of life’s joys and sorrows, beginnings and farewells, triumphs and challenges. Harriet’s life was not simply measured in years, but in the generations that followed her and the countless ways her existence helped shape their own.
She was a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and great-great-great-grandmother. But beyond those cherished titles, she was the beginning of so many stories. Every child born into her family added another chapter to a legacy that began long before them and will continue long after.
Her family, now scattered across the globe, remains connected by something far greater than geography: a shared beginning, a common heritage, and the extraordinary woman at the center of it all.
There is something deeply beautiful about a life that stretches across 105 years. Harriet lived through a world that changed in ways few could have predicted. She belonged to a generation whose experiences remind us of the importance of resilience, endurance, and the bonds of family. Her life connected the past to the present, and through her descendants, it will continue reaching into the future.
Although her passing leaves an immeasurable space in the hearts of those who loved her, her legacy is far too vast to be contained by grief. It lives in the faces of her children, the laughter of her grandchildren, the accomplishments of her great-grandchildren, and the new generations who will one day learn her name and discover the remarkable woman from whom they descended.
One woman. Six children. Thirty-three grandchildren. Five generations of descendants. One extraordinary legacy.
As we celebrate Harriet’s 105 remarkable years, we remember that the true measure of a life is not simply how long someone lived, but how far their love, influence, and legacy continue to reach.
And Harriet’s legacy reaches around the world.
Today, we say farewell to the woman whose life became the foundation of an extraordinary family. We honor the years she was given, the generations she witnessed, and the countless lives forever connected because she was here.
Though her earthly journey has ended, the family tree she planted will continue to grow. Its branches will stretch across oceans, its roots will remain firmly planted in Pennsylvania, and its story will be told for generations yet to come.
Rest peacefully, Mrs. Harriet Ellen Smith.
One hundred and five years was a remarkable gift. Being part of your legacy is an even greater one.
