James “Jim” Eustis Hubbard, 93, of Reading, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2018 after a brief illness. He was the loving husband of the late Anne (Heimann) Hubbard. The couple met in New York City and married in 1953. They had a rich and creative life together until Anne passed away in 2010.
Jim was born on August 23, 1924 in Rochester, NY a son of Keith Baldwin and Rose (Majilton) Hubbard.
He graduated from Catskill High School in 1941. Then he served in the Pacific during WWII in the Marine Corps. After returning from active duty, he attended Syracuse University where he graduated as an English major in 1948.
Together with his wife, Anne, Jim travelled the world working as a filmmaker, cameraman, sound engineer, director, producer, writer, teacher and adventurer. After retiring from teaching in 2004, Jim and Anne moved to Reading and bought a house in the Centre Park. They were both very active in the arts and Centre Park communities. Jim was very active in a local writers’ group called Writers Without Boarders throughout his years in Reading, publishing many articles in his home-town Catskill newspaper, as well as an e-book of memoirs from his adventurous life entitled At the Bottom of the Stairs.
Surviving is a son, Jonathan and his wife, Mary Ellen Rowland of Florida; two grandchildren: Allison and Josh Roland; two great grandchildren; two nieces: Dorothea Hast and her husband, Stanley Scott of Middletown, CT and Linda Hubbard Lalande of Los Angeles, CA; a nephew, Thomas Hast of Boulder, CO and numerous other nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held later in the spring. Memorial contributions can be made to the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts, 201 Washington St., Reading, PA 19601.
