Born in Reading, Pa., on February 12, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Wilfred C. and Elva (Pfautz) Heckman. She was a 1943 graduate of Reading High School and also attended the McCann Business School. Jean was employed in the general offices of Vanity Fair Knitting Mills, The Textile Machine Works, and JE Tobacco Co., retiring in 1992.
Growing up in Northwest Reading and working at Vanity Fair, close friendships were formed that would last her entire life.
She was a longtime fan of jazz, the blues, and big band music and often had the turntable spinning. She enjoyed the seniors group activities at Hope Lutheran Church and loved the City of Reading, especially Penn Street. Most of all, Jean enjoyed family time, family dinners and finding her way to the dessert table. She never met a piece of chocolate she didn't like! Jean was a caring and compassionate mother, grandmother, neighbor and friend.
Jean is survived by her son, David H. Lawrence, husband of Francine (Diego) Lawrence of Muhlenberg Township; and two grandchildren, Taylor F. Lawrence and Evan D. Lawrence. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her former husband, Henry Lawrence; and her brother, Richard W. Heckman.
The family would like to thank the Berks Heim Staff for the wonderful and compassionate care of Jean. The family would also like to thank the many in-home caregivers and neighbors on Schuylkill Avenue for their support.
