Kenneth "Ken" Henry Springer, 95, of West Lawn, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at Country Meadows, Wyomissing. Born on August 13,1926 in Reading, PA he was a son to the late William J. Springer and Irene C. (Filbert) Springer.
A devoted husband, Ken was predeceased by his loving wife of 64 years, Vivian (Kochard) Springer, for whom he devoted years of care during her battle with Alzheimer's. He was also predeceased by his son James Springer, husband of Cally (Sattler) Springer; and his two brothers William Springer and Jack Springer.
Ken is survived by his son, Kenneth E. Springer and his wife Anne Marie (Cavallucci) Springer, of Spring Township and his daughter Susan (Springer) Leffler and her husband Gary Leffler, Birdsboro, PA. He was also lovingly referred to as “Grandpa” by his seven grandchildren: Stephanie Bricker, Thomas Leffler, Michael Leffler, Michelle Hassler, Kenneth H. Springer II, David Springer, and Jessica Springer. Ken also leaves behind seven great-grandchildren: Ian, Christopher, Anna, Avrie, Isla, Sophie, and Iden to cherish his memory.
Ken attended Reading High School where he played basketball and graduated in June of 1944. Following high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and proudly served on the USS Carondelet, IX 1365 in the Philippines and the USS Shenandoah, AD 206 in the Atlantic. After graduating from the Wyomissing Polytechnical Institute in 1949, Ken spent nine years as a textile worker before accepting a job at AT&T. There, he served as a supervisor overseeing the production of diodes, transistors, magnetrons, integrated circuits, and picture phones. He fondly spent 30 years at AT&T before retiring.
Ken could often be found on the golf course -- a passion and legacy he passed on to his sons and grandchildren. He loved teaching his grandchildren how to juggle, a skill (like many others) that he picked up from a book. Ken was always ready to learn new skills and accept a challenge. After enrolling in a painting class as an adult, Ken demonstrated an innate artistic ability that is preserved through his beautiful oil paintings.
Always “on the go,” Ken enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and activities. Every day, he would “pop in” and visit his children, was always available to lend a helping hand, and delighted in hearing the latest updates on his family. He loved visiting Atlantic City and watching horse races at Penn National Racetrack. Even well into his 90’s, he loved to ride a workout bike, and even helped instruct exercise classes.
Ken was a lifelong learner who possessed an open mind, loved to listen to people’s stories and experiences, and exhibited spunk -- an unwavering spark and passion for life. He truly made a lasting impression on all who met him.
