The Reverend Dr. Robert G. Aregood, 84, of Reading, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2026. Born on October 7, 1941, in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, Robert devoted his life to faith, service, family, and the pursuit of justice.
Bob was the son of the late John M. Aregood Sr. and Alma S. Trout Aregood Anderson and was also preceded in death by his stepfather, David Anderson.
A lifelong learner and dedicated minister, Robert graduated from Blue Mountain High School before attending Albright College. He also earned his Master of Divinity from Lancaster Theological Seminary. Committed to scholarship and ministry, he later received a Doctor of Ministry degree from Drew University.
Throughout his life, Bob answered the call to serve wherever he was needed. During the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, he worked alongside his brother at Back Bay Mission on the Gulf Coast, where he demonstrated both courage and compassion in the face of racial injustice.
During his time at Back Bay Mission, Bob and his older brother, the Rev. Jack Aregood, received a call from the Biloxi police informing them that members of the Ku Klux Klan had erected a burning cross on the Mission lawn. Rather than retreat in fear, the brothers responded with quiet courage and humor. Gathering a few sticks and a bag of marshmallows, they walked out to the blazing cross, stood beside it, and began roasting marshmallows. Their simple but powerful act sent an unmistakable message: they would not be intimidated by hatred or fear. It was a moment that reflected Robert’s lifelong commitment to justice, courage, and the conviction that love is stronger than hate.
While attending college, he served as administrator of a children’s home in Reading, Pennsylvania, and later worked with Lancaster Family and Children’s Services while in seminary.
Ordained in the United Church of Christ, Bob faithfully served congregations and communities for more than four decades. He was best known for his long pastorate at Zion United Church of Christ in Reading, where he served from 1968 until his retirement in 2011. Following retirement, he continued his ministry through an interim pastorates at Rosedale United Church of Christ, Laureldale. He also served as administrator of Episcopal House, a residence for fixed-income seniors, and was known throughout the Reading area as a dependable pastor who graciously conducted funerals for families who had no church home.
Beyond the pulpit, Bob dedicated himself to community service. He served on numerous boards and organizations, including Phoebe Berks, Friends of Albright Music, and the Reading Redevelopment Authority. A passionate advocate for social justice, he worked tirelessly on behalf of those in need and never hesitated to speak honestly when conscience required it.
Music was one of Bob’s lifelong joys. He supported church music ministries, enjoyed building organs with his long-time friend Henry Hunsicker, and shared his love of music with countless others. He frequently visited nursing homes, often bringing musicians along to brighten the lives of residents through song and fellowship.
Bob will be remembered for his unwavering faith, quick wit, generous spirit, and willingness to help anyone who crossed his path. He was a gifted counselor, trusted friend, devoted pastor, and compassionate listener. Most of all, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose example of hard work, integrity, and service left a lasting impact on those who knew him.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Marie Crnkovich Aregood; his son, Robert George Aregood Jr. and wife Erin; his daughter, Katherine Aregood Crusi and husband Mike; and his cherished grandchildren, Joshua Crusi, Zachary Crusi, and Jenna Aregood.
A private interment will be held on Wednesday, June 24, 2026. A memorial service celebrating Bob’s life and ministry will be held in September, with the date and time to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Rosedale United Church of Christ, 1301 E Bellevue Ave, Laureldale, PA 19605.
The family gives thanks for the many lives Bob touched through his ministry and friendship and invites all who knew him to honor his memory by continuing his legacy of faith, compassion, service, and justice. Theo C Auman Funeral Home, Reading is honored to be serving the family.
