It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. Richard Louis Hoy Sr., 76, of Muhlenberg Township, a devoted family man, cherished friend, and a true American hero. Richard entered eternal rest on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at his residence with his loving wife by his side.
Born on January 01, 1947, he was a cherished son to the late Franklin and Florence (Kramer) Hoy. Richard grew up in Reading, PA; was a graduate of Reading High School, class of 1966 and later went on to proudly serve his country with honor and distinction in the United States Army, during the Vietnam War. He displayed unparalleled bravery, which earned him numerous medals and commendations; including the prestigious Purple Heart, for his sacrifices in the line of duty. Richard exemplified the true meaning of patriotism, selflessness, and commitment to a cause greater than oneself.
Upon returning to civilian life, Richard worked as a receiving clerk at Luden's (later Hershey's) for 34 years, until his retirement in 2009.
Richard had a passion for slow pitch softball, displaying a fierce competitive spirit on the field that mirrored his dedication to duty; that earned him the respect and admiration of teammates and opponents alike. Off the field, Richard was also A skilled bowler (201 average). He spent countless hours in friendly competition amongst family, friends and with various bowling leagues in the county. Nature, too, held a special place in Richard's heart. He found solace in going fishing and had a unique affinity for the animal kingdom. Richard's backyard became a haven for various small critters who quickly became his cherished companions.
Known for his infectious smile and an uncanny ability to light up any room. His social prowess was legendary, and he had an innate ability to spark up a conversation with anyone. As a prankster, Richard possessed a playful spirit and mischievous sense of humor that was contagious, leaving a trail of laughter wherever he went.
Beyond his lighthearted antics, Richard was a pillar of support for anyone in need. His generosity knew no bounds, whether it was lending a helping hand or offering a listening ear, he was a true friend to all. One of Richard's most admirable qualities was his innate ability to see beyond societal divides. He grew up in a world that grappled with prejudice, but that didn't stop him from standing up for people regardless of the color of their skin. Richard demonstrated that love and understanding could triumph over hatred and division.
In honoring his memory, let us carry forward the torch of courage, honor, resilience, family values, moral principles, equality and acceptance. He will be missed by all blessed enough to have known him.
Richard's spirit will be carried on by his beloved wife of 52 years, Gwendolyn L. (Hallman) Hoy; his 2 sons Richard Hoy Jr. and his wife Bethann, of Temple, PA; and David Hoy, husband of the late Mayra Hoy, of South Heidelberg, PA; and his sister Dorothy McClatchie.
