Born Donald Michael Scruggs to Lloyd and Edna Scruggs on July 28, 1937 in the city of Los Angeles state of California.
Don was quite a chef and loved the art of cooking. He spent over forty years cooking for various organizations; The Lobster House, The Velvet Turtle, Castanolas, Tony's on the Pier, The Metovich Crown Room at LAX, he owned his own restaurant named "The Open Hearth", and worked in Redding for some local golf courses. He loved cooking for his loving family and friends.
In his youth he was an excellent swimmer and loved the ocean, he also enjoyed scuba diving, and exploring the Palos Verde's Coastline, and cliffs. When his children were young he would take them with him on many adventures, they even camped on the rocks by the tied pools. He liked to take his children fishing off the Redondo, and Hermosa beach pier's, and spent many summers at the beach. Fourth of July was one of his favorite times, setting up camp on the beach, with his family, his brother Danny and wife Velva, and his sister's Stella, and Bea and their husbands. Don loved being with family and especially looked forward to the fireworks show at the end of the night.
Don has lived in Redding for approximately thirty years and he loved his life, with wife Mary. He had two dogs that he loved dearly. Don and Mary went to mass at Our Lady Mercy Of Catholic Church, and were involved in some ministries. One of Don's favorite things was making hugh Holiday feasts for Mary and her family. Don loved to make food for people, and was well known for many dishes, like his Thanksgiving turkey dinner, with all the fixings, especially his gravy.
He was an accomplished artist and sculptor. He often used a special mixture of coffee grounds and other products to create his sculptures, he also created beautiful paintings of ocean scapes, land scapes, animal life, and other objects of interest to Don. Don loved to create and was a true artist at heart..
Donald passed away November 9, 2014 at Marquis Care At Shasta in Redding, California.
He will be greatly missed by his loving wife Mary, his daughters Mary and Lonnie, his sons Gary and Greg, and many friends and family members, and his church.
