
Born to be a blessing to James and Bertha Evans on October 1, 1926 in Lancaster, California, a son, Eugene Dale. They moved to Oklahoma in 1930, then moved back to CA in 1942. Graduated from Porterville High School in 1944. Enlisted in the U.S. Navy in August 1944 (6 weeks before his 18th birthday). Received an honorable discharge on March 21,1946. Enrolled at Porterville Junior College in Sept. 1946. Graduated with an A.A. in 1948. Took a year off from school and worked full time at Purity Food Store.
He began courting 16 yr old Dorothy Jewel Clagg and they got married on April 30, 1949. His father performed the ceremony. The newlyweds left for Arcata, CA in July where he enrolled in Humboldt College and graduated in January 1952. He was offered a job teaching 7th grade at Lemoore, CA in August.
By then he and Dorothy had a daughter, Vickie, and a son, Dwayne and they all packed up in 1954 and moved to Redding, CA where he accepted a teaching position at Rother Elementary School as an 8th grade teacher. In 1956, he became principal at Shasta Meadows Elementary School where he stayed for 7 years. He attended summer school at Chico State and received his masters degree in 1961.
He returned to teaching for 1 1/2 years at Magnolia Elementary School. In 1965, he became educational director for the Job Corp Center in Lewiston, CA from January to August. A door was opened in Felton, CA. in 1965 and he became principal at San Lorenzo Valley Elementary School for 3 years. The last door to be opened in his teaching career was when he was hired as superintendent at Dunsmuir Elementary School in 1968 where he stayed until he retired in 1982. He loved his work as an administrator and teacher and had a positive influence in many children and adult lives.
He and Dorothy retired in Millville, CA where Gene built his dream log home. They resided there until 2012 and moved to Redding, CA. to be close to their daughter and son-in-law.
It was his desire to faithfully serve the Lord and bring glory to his name. He truly was an example of Colossians 3:23, “And whatsoever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not men.” He said many times, “God is good.”
Thank you Lord for the blessing of being his wife for 70 years. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He joined his son, Dwayne, in heaven on October 19, 2019, plus many other friends and family. He leaves behind his wife, Dorothy, his daughter, Vickie and her husband Roy, daughter-in-law, Carol, 4 grandchildren Stephen, Amber, Katie, and Jefferson, and 6 great grandchildren, Jared, Sadie, Aya, Kai, Allie and Azaria.
Christ was always number one in his life and his testimony has had a huge impact not only on his family, but friends and associates as well. He will be missed by all.
Services will be held on Monday, November 4, 2019 at the Veteran’s Cemetary in Igo, CA at 11:00 followed by another service at Grace Baptist Church on Churn Creek Rd, Redding, CA. at 1:00.
