

John J. Humphrey (“Jack”) passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by loved ones on Thursday, October 22, 2015. He died of natural causes at age 96 after living a rich and full life. He was born 09-19-1919 in Alameda, California. He lived as a child in Hollywood and moved to Shasta County in 1936 where he attended Shasta High School and worked as a Machinist’s Helper at the Shasta Dam site. In 1941, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps for the World War II European Theatre to serve as a Liaison Pilot and Staff Sergeant. After the war he returned to the Redding, California area to work on Shasta Dam until 1950. Jack loved to fly small airplanes and after working for the US Forest Service and Bureau of Reclamation he worked as a charter pilot and flight instructor. In 1967 he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in English and became a teacher at Nova High School, also teaching some night classes and contributed to the reading lab at Shasta College. He retired from teaching in 1981 to travel, as well as to build houses and develop a small rental business. Jack is survived by his beloved wife Margaret, his three children; Michael Humphrey, William Humphrey (wife Janice) and Joanne Humphrey McCarley along (husband Jay), two grandchildren; Kevin Humphrey (wife Sherie) and Amanda McCarley, and two great grandchildren; Anthony Humphrey and Samantha MacDonald. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held Monday, November 2, 2015 at CrossPointe Community Church on 2960 Hartnell Avenue, Redding, CA 96002.
