Richard Malvern Hoke was born in 1931 in Burlington, Iowa, during the depths of the Great Depression. He was the sixth child born to Claude Hoke and Florence Wickham Hoke. Richard spent his early childhood in Burlington before the family relocated to Portland, Oregon, in 1943, where his father found work in the shipyards supporting the wartime effort during World War II.
Following the war, the family moved to California, eventually settling in Oakland, where Richard married Marilyn Satterthwaite in 1953. After welcoming their first son, Tommy, the young family later made their home in Redding, where their family continued to grow with the addition of Lynda, Russel, and Kenneth. It was there that Richard and Marilyn built much of the life and legacy that would be remembered by all who knew and loved them.
Richard wore many hats throughout his life, both literally and figuratively. He built a career with American Building Maintenance before starting his own janitorial business, Eagle Building Service. Of all the roles he held in life, he will be most affectionately remembered by those fortunate enough to know him as a devoted husband, loving father, hardworking provider, compassionate grandfather, and an all-around good man.
Richard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marilyn, in 2023, after 69 years of marriage, a partnership that stood as a testament to loyalty, perseverance, and love across generations of family life. He is survived by their four children, 11 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren, all of whom carry forward pieces of his character, humor, work ethic, and enduring presence.
While Richard will be laid to rest at Lawncrest Chapel, his enduring spirit and the impact he had on those around him will live on in the hearts, memories, and actions of the family and friends who loved him.
In lieu of flowers make donations to the Redding First Church of the Nazarene youth program.
